Linear Welding & Fabrication: The Northridge Owner’s Guide

If you have a Linear gate opener with a broken weld bracket, a cracked hinge mount, or a bent arm assembly, we can fabricate and install the replacement, usually in a single visit. Most Linear welding and fabrication work in Northridge runs between $180 and $450 installed, depending on the part and the amount of cutting and rewelding involved. We stock common Linear-compatible brackets, gate arms, and hinge plates on the truck, and we can fabricate what we don’t stock in our shop, often the same day.

Owners usually discover the problem the hard way. The gate starts dragging on one side, or the opener motor labors and then stops midway. When you look closely, the weld at the hinge or the arm bracket has cracked through. Sometimes the metal itself has rusted thin after years of sprinkler spray and San Fernando Valley heat. The opener still works; the metal around it has given up.

Key Takeaways

  • We weld and fabricate for Linear swing and slide gate openers, including older Linear models no longer supported by the manufacturer.
  • Most jobs are one visit, with parts and labor priced upfront before anything is welded.
  • Northridge weather matters: dry heat and irrigation overspray create specific rust patterns we see constantly.
  • Every weld is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear’s residential lineup shares a lot of mechanical DNA, but there are real differences between the swing arm setups on the LRA and LSO series, the slide gate brackets on the SL series, and the post-mount hardware on older Linear actuators like the G-series. The critical measurement is the arm bracket spacing and the bolt pattern on the gate post or gate frame. Linear changed post bracket dimensions between generations, and a bracket from an old Linear G2000 does not always line up with the newer LRA arm without an adapter plate.

We are an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with Linear, but we have been repairing and fabricating for Linear openers long enough to know which OEM part numbers cross over and where a quality aftermarket bracket is actually the better call. For high-stress points, like the arm connection on a heavy wrought-iron gate, we prefer a fabricated steel bracket over a cast OEM piece. Cast parts snap. Welded plate steel bends and holds. We make that call honestly, based on your gate’s weight and how the old part failed.

A note on identification: the Linear model number is on a label on the side of the operator housing, but on Northridge homes with 20-year-old gates, that label is frequently bleached out or gone. We can often identify the unit from the arm geometry and the control board layout. If you can read the model number, great. If you can’t, don’t lose sleep over it. We will figure it out on site.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate scrapes or drags at the hinge side. When a hinge weld cracks or the hinge plate pulls away from the post, the gate’s weight shifts onto the opener. The motor strains, and the gate leaf sags just enough to scrape the concrete on the low corner.
  • The opener arm buckles or flexes visibly during travel. Linear arms are designed to push and pull in a straight plane. When the bracket welds weaken, the arm gets lateral load it was never meant to take. You will see it flex, hear a clunk at the end of the cycle, or find fresh metal shavings under the arm pivot.
  • The gate stops mid-cycle and reverses. Linear control boards detect resistance and reverse to prevent damage. A failing weld or cracked bracket creates intermittent mechanical resistance that confuses the board. The opener looks like the problem. It isn’t; the metal is.
  • Rust staining around the hinges, bolt heads, or arm connection. That reddish-brown weeping around a weld joint means water is getting in and the rust is working outward. CA weather is gentler than coastal climates, but sprinkler overspray and morning dew settle on gate hardware and sit there. We have seen hinges rust completely through while the rest of the gate looks fine.
  • The gate rattles in wind or feels loose when you push on it by hand. A properly hung gate is solid. Play at the hinge or arm connection is the earliest warning sign of weld fatigue. On a Linear-equipped gate it will only get worse, and it will shorten the life of the opener.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Northridge, most Linear welding and fabrication repairs fall into three ranges:

  • Bracket or hinge plate replacement (one weld point, no fabrication): $180 to $260, including the part and welded installation.
  • Arm or bracket fabrication (custom steel, measured and welded on site): $260 to $380, depending on material thickness and complexity.
  • Full hinge overhaul on a heavy gate (both hinges, possibly the post plate): $320 to $450, including grinding out the old welds, fitting new material, and re-hanging the gate square.

What drives the range is gate weight, whether we need to remove the gate leaf to weld properly, and whether the old hardware is worth saving or needs to be cut out entirely. A 300-pound driveway gate gets heavier steel and a stronger weld than a 90-pound walk gate. You get the price before we start, and it does not move. The quote you approve is the quote you pay.

Every weld we make on a Linear opener is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise. If the weld fails or the bracket is not right, we come back and make it right. No paperwork, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

Some things are worth checking on your own. Look at the hinges. Look at the arm bracket. If you see cracked paint lines around a weld, rust staining, or fresh metal shavings, you have found the problem. That costs you nothing and saves a diagnostic step when we arrive.

Welding it yourself is another matter. A gate under tension, a heavy leaf, and a weld that needs to hold both static load and repeated stress cycles is not a beginner’s job. Worse, a gate that comes off its hinges is genuinely dangerous. A 400-pound steel gate falling on a person is a hospital visit or worse. If the weld fails while the opener is cycling, the arm can whip and take a chip out of concrete, a car, or a shin. This is the one part of the repair where we will say it plainly: if you do not weld for a living, don’t learn on a gate that weighs more than you do.
