Elite Access Control Installation: The Northridge Owner’s Guide

If you have an Elite gate operator and the access control side has failed, we stock the parts and complete the installation, usually in one visit. A full Elite access control installation in Northridge typically runs $450 to $1,400 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a keypad, adding a telephone entry system, or wiring a new loop detector. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: the keypad goes dead, the remote stops triggering the opener, or the gate opens on its own in the middle of the night. We’re an independent gate company, not affiliated with Elite, but we’ve serviced their equipment across the San Fernando Valley long enough to know exactly which parts fail, why, and what belongs in your specific model.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite has put out several lines over the years, and the access control wiring differs between them. The SL-3000 and SL-3000UL slide gate operators are the most common in Northridge driveways, and their access control board takes a straightforward dry-contact input. The older CSL-2000 series uses the same logic but an older terminal layout. The swing gate models, like the EL-25 and EL-35 residential units, often route access control through a plug-in receiver board rather than the main control board. The easiest way to identify which you have is to look at the model plate on the side of the motor housing or on the inside of the cover. The model number starts with two to four letters, and a photo of that plate sent to us will tell us most of what we need to know before we even dispatch.

On the parts side, Elite uses momentary-contact logic for most of its access inputs. That means the access device sends a short signal, the gate opens, and the signal drops. If you or a previous installer wired a toggle-type device into that input, you’ll get odd behavior: gates that open but won’t close, or control boards that burn out relay contacts years early. We also see a lot of aftermarket keypads wired into Elite boards without a common ground tied back properly. That works for a while, then stops working on hot days when the board’s voltage sags. If you want OEM Elite parts, we can order them, but for most access control jobs we recommend quality aftermarket equivalents like DoorKing keypads or Viking telephone entry units, which have held up better in California sun than the original Elite-branded accessories.

Signs Your Elite Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad works sometimes, not others. The membrane or button contacts wear down, especially on gates that face west into afternoon sun in Northridge. The UV breaks down the keypad face, and the buttons start requiring harder presses or stop registering digits fully.
  • Remote opens the gate from the street but not the driveway. This usually points to the antenna or the receiver board wearing out, not the remote itself. In Elite units, the receiver is often a small plug-in card, and the solder joints on the antenna connector crack after years of heat cycling.
  • Gate opens by itself at random. Almost every time we trace this on an Elite, the problem is in the access wiring: a shorted loop detector, a corroded wire nut in a junction box, or a keypad with water inside it sending phantom signals.
  • The telephone entry or intercom stopped rang. If you have a call box mounted at the street and it no longer rings the house phone, the problem is often the phone line, but on older Elite installs the relay driver on the access board simply gives out after a decade or more of service.
  • You hear a click but no movement. The access device is sending the signal and the board is receiving it, but the relay that actually starts the motor has pitted contacts. This is repairable on some Elite boards and a replacement situation on others.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard Elite access control installation in Northridge, here’s what we typically quote, parts and labor both included:

  • Replacement keypad (aftermarket, like DoorKing): $450-$650 installed
  • Replacement keypad (OEM Elite if available): $550-$750 installed
  • Telephone entry / intercom system: $850-$1,400 installed
  • Loop detector and saw-cut installation in existing driveway: $700-$1,100 installed
  • Receiver board replacement on existing Elite opener: $350-$550 installed

The range comes down to the exact model, how much wiring has to be pulled, and whether the existing conduit is still usable. We quote the price before any work starts, and that price is the price on the bill. Every Elite access control installation we complete in Northridge carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it’s not right, we come back and make it right, no paperwork, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things you can safely check yourself. Confirm the circuit breaker feeding the gate hasn’t tripped. On most Elite openers there’s a small green LED on the control board; if it’s not lit, the board isn’t getting power. If your keypad has a plastic face with visible cracks or cloudiness, that’s the UV damage we mentioned, and no amount of reprogramming will fix it. Beyond that, access control work involves low-voltage wiring, relay logic, and in some Elite models line-voltage terminals inside the same enclosure. If you don’t know the difference, don’t open that cover. One slip with a screwdriver against the wrong terminal and you’re buying a new control board instead of a $450 keypad. If you’d rather have it diagnosed over the phone first, call us at (925) 966-4150. A live person answers, any hour, and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s worth a service call.
