You look closer and see a hinge ear torn from the post, a cracked weld at the operator mount, or a gate wheel bracket that has rusted through. • A visible crack at a weld joint. This is the most common fail point on swing gates: the hinge ear cracks where it meets the post, usually from years of wind load pushing against the gate leaf. The crack starts small, at the top or bottom edge, and grows with every open cycle.
• The gate sags or scrapes the driveway. A sagging leaf in Northridge is almost always one of two things: a hinge pin that has ovalized its hole, or a weld that has broken and let the gate drop. If the operator is still pulling, the motor is working harder every day to move a gate that is no longer swinging true.
• The operator vibrates or “walks” during travel. A DoorKing motor should run smooth and steady. When it rocks or chatters, the operator mount or chain idler bracket has worked loose or cracked, and the vibration is feeding back into the steel, worsening the crack.

• The gate moves even when the operator is off. A broken hinge weld or failed gate wheel bracket lets the leaf shift under its own weight. That is a safety issue: a gate that no longer holds position can drift into a person, a car, or a fence line.
