Which BFT Models This Applies To

This applies to every BFT gate that uses welded steel framing, hinge brackets, or fabricated mounting plates. Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags toward the latch side. This is the classic Northridge tell. The hinge-side weld or the post bracket has fatigued, and the gate is now hanging lower than it was hung. The BFT operator compensates for a while, then the limit switches start acting confused, then the motor overheats.
• You hear a metal-on-metal creak that was not there last year. That creak is the sound of a cracked weld flexing under load. Weld cracks grow fast on an automatic gate because the motor cycles the joint hundreds of times a week.
• The gate jerks or stutters in one spot. A separated bracket or a worn hinge point changes the mechanical advantage the BFT operator expects. The operator pushes against a variable load, and you feel it as a stutter.
• Bolts keep loosening, even after you tighten them. Bolts pull through rusted or fatigued steel because the steel is no longer holding them. Tightening the bolt is not a repair. The plate underneath is done.
• Rust bloom around a bracket or weld joint. In Northridge the dry heat spares us a lot of coastal rust, but sprinkler overspray and morning dew settle on gate hardware year-round. Once you see that orange dust line around a bracket, the metal underneath is thinner than it looks.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely do is inspect. Look at the hinge points, the weld joints, and the mounting brackets. Take photos. Measure the gap where the gate sags. None of that requires a tool. What you should not do is weld on an automated gate yourself, for two honest reasons. First, a bad weld on a 400-pound moving gate becomes a projectile problem when it fails, and it will fail. Second, welding near a live BFT operator, limit switches, and control wiring without isolating the board is how owners turn a $200 bracket job into a $700 board replacement.
